Book reviews recommended by our students in the Spain group
Discussing book reviews with students in an ELE class can be a very instructive and fun activity, which also allows the teacher to get to know his/her students better, and to look for activities that are of interest to them.
In this group we discussed a book that each student liked, and each commented on why they chose it.
Henry suggests reading The Picture of Dorian Grey, a classic. Henry loves it because Oscar Wilde criticises people’s lives in Victorian England. He finds the contrast between ideal images and reality very interesting.
Keita recommends Twilight by Stephanie Meyers. A love story set in Washington, DC, in which one of the main characters is a vampire. Mysterious, full of adventure and love triangles.
In her review, Hallie talks about a collection of essays by Audre Lorde on feminism and anti-racism. Sister, Outsider. For her it is an intelligent, exciting and profound read.
Ashley has made us very curious with her novel The Bookseller, by Cynthia Swanson. In this novel, Kitty, the protagonist, is a single woman who works in a bookshop and dreams of another life in which she has a husband and children. But why do these dreams seem so real? We have to read it to find out.
Danielle invites us to read, if we haven’t already, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. The story of characters who need to fight for home, food, freedom… and where there can only be one survivor. Danielle finds it a very dramatic and entertaining book to read.
And Edward presents the review of The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August, by Claire North. A science fiction novel, but also a thriller, historical or even an adventure novel, where the author teaches us a great life lesson through her immortal character.
