What is the Paisaje de la Luz?

Discover one of the most beautiful areas of Madrid.

In 2019, Spain submitted to UNESCO the candidacy of the Paseo del Prado and the Buen Retiro, Landscape of Arts and Sciences to become part of the World Heritage List.

The proposal was favorably accepted in 2021 and today this part of Madrid is already a member of the World Heritage List. It is an extraordinary urban landscape, where nature and culture are united from the 16th century to the present day.

That part of the city that is now part of the World Heritage has been named Paisaje de la Luz (The Landscape of Light), and joins the other sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List in the Community of Madrid:

  • To the Monastery of El Escorial
  • The historic center of Alcalá de Henares
  • The cultural landscape of Aranjuez
  • The Montejo Beech Forest.

The importance of World Heritage

The UNESCO World Heritage List is widely known throughout the world. It was created in 1972 through the World Cultural and Natural Heritage Convention. This list accumulates the sites that have outstanding universal value.

The main objective of this initiative is to catalog, preserve and promote sites of exceptional cultural or natural importance for the common heritage of humanity. It is a very important promotional factor for the countries that are part of the World Heritage.

Every year, many nominations are submitted and carefully evaluated. Currently, UNESCO’s World Heritage List includes more than 1,100 sites all over the world.

Spain has a total of 49, being one of the countries with the largest number of sites declared by UNESCO along with Italy and China.

Paseo del Prado

The wonderful Paseo del Prado is one of the first urban tree-lined promenades in Europe. Since the 15th century, citizens have used it as a place for recreation. In it is located the famous “Triangle of Art”, formed by the Prado, Reina Sofia, and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums.

King Felipe II was the person who was in charge of improving and conditioning with fountains and trees in this beautiful place.

In addition to art, something that makes the Paseo del Prado special is the incorporation of science into the urban landscape of the area, with the Royal Botanical Gardens and the Naval Museum.
