4 months in Madrid – Fall or Spring Semester

This Business Internship Semester is ideal for students with a Business, Economics or International Studies majors, as well as other majors that combine Spanish with their speciality, with a strong knowledge of Spanish who wish to combine an academic program abroad with work experience.

Requirements

Students must have a good working use of Spanish before starting in the companies that host interns since these are looking for trained and knowledgeable workers who can contribute from day one.

Other skills, such as IT skills, are also required for most internship positions.

Students should be independent, mature, responsible and flexible and be able to adapt to new situations.

The Student may express an interest in a specific type of activity; TANDEM will do their best to respect the abilities and desires of the student but cannot guarantee that each intern will be placed in the exact position or company requested, although the internship will be carried out in as similar environment to that requested.

Interns are not paid in Spain.

Interns normally work 12 to 20 hours per week, depending on the company. These hours may be completed in two or three days or over a five-day workweek.

  • Proven Spanish language progress
  • Small language classes with international students
  • All classes are taught in Spanish
  • Final grades have USA equivalents

Course work

  • 4 hours introduction to working in Spanish and to Spanish companies during the first weeks.
  • 4 weeks intensive Spanish Language classes with international students. This initial immersion helps interns fine-tone their language skills, thus making adaptation to the workplace all the easier.

After an initial placement test, once entry level is determined, the student progresses towards the highest level of his/her assimilation in the hours allotted in the semester.

3 months working as an intern in a company.

Student may also choose one additional optional class:

  • 10 weeks specialized Spanish Culture /Optional classes
  • Small seminar classes with active student participation and activities, both in and outside the class
  • Spanish Art and Architecture
  • Spanish Current Events and Topics
  • Spanish Business

Every two weeks (16 hours) the intern will meet with the Internship Advisor to discuss the progress, exchange opinions and complete a written assignment to serve a diary on the intercultural and work experiences. All interns must write a final project reflecting on this experience.

Class Schedule

  • Language classes – From Monday to Friday – 9.30 – 13.00 during the first month
  • Internship work experience

  • Cultural Activities in afternoons or evenings or weekends – to suit

Dates

SEMESTER WITH INTERNSHIP

  • Family Homestay – Single room + half Board
  • DATES:
    • SPRING SEMESTER: January to April
    • SUMMER SEMESTER: April to August
    • FALL SEMESTER: August to December

FEES INCLUDE:

  • 4 weeks of intensive language classes

  • Cervantes Institute – AVE on-line course for 6 months after leaving

SIELE Exam

SIELE is “The International Evaluation Service of the Spanish Language”, an online evaluation and certification service to test Spanish language ability.
