In not much more than a square kilometer you will find an artistic triangle anchored by the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the Reina Sofia Museum. Between the three, you have access to some of the greatest geniuses in art history without the need to walk for too long.
The Prado Museum is one of the best and most complete art galleries in the world, containing more than 7600 paintings, 1000 sculptures, 4800 prints and 8200 drawings; however, all are not on exhibit. Even so, its rooms show so many works of art you will need several days to visit the whole collection. The Garden of Earthly Delights by Bosch, The Nobleman with his Hand on his Chest by El Greco, The Death of the Virgin by Mantegna, Christ Washing the Disciples’ Feet by Tintoretto, Las Meninas de Velazquez, The Three Graces by Rubens and Charles IV of Spain and his Family by Goya are some of the most emblematic treasures.
In contrast with the classicism of the Prado Museum, the Thyssen Museum has a unique collection. There are European works of the highest value by English, German, Dutch and primitive Italian schools of art, but it also has a collection of different European avant-garde, impressionist and expressionist works, as well as North American pieces of art from the second half of the 20th century. You will also find Western works of art from the 13th century through the 20th.
The Reina Sofia Museum provides the contemporary touch, as it has an important collection of Spanish historical avant-garde works of art by artists from the 20th century such as Picasso, whose famous worldwide piece of art El Guernica can be found in the museum. Also plan on viewing works by Miró, Oteiza, Julio González, Tápies and Juan Gris.
Apart from the museums themselves, you can delight with a nice walk around the gardens that surround the museums and admire the monuments that shine with their own light: the fountains of Neptuno and Cibeles, buildings such as the Bank of Spain or the City Council of Madrid, or monuments such as the Puerta de Alcalá.
