Program overview

For Students with an Education or Spanish Major or Minor in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language, as a Second Language and Bilingual Education who are pursuing a degree with a Teacher Certification.

During this course all contents related to foreign language teaching will be covered, including the mental processes involved in learning.

  1. The basic objectives in teaching, as well as the implications of mental activity required of the learner.
  2. Group dynamics and social forms of work. How to make class more interesting and productive.
  3. The means and materials that can be used in teaching. How to create new materials and put them to use in the classroom.
  4. How to make the most of and increase the learners’ four communicative skills: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, oral expression and written expression.
  5. Ways and means of correction. How to get learners to improve their knowledge of the language.

2 Language classes, 2 Education classes and 1 elective. Teaching Methodology for Teachers of Spanish and Bilingual Educators included.

Our contents include diversity and topics on Immigration for teachers in bilingual schools (teaching Spanish to English speakers, English to Latin American immigrants as well as formal reading and writing skills in Spanish for immigrants from Latin America). We have a proven track record of Spanish language progress. Small language classes with international students.

All classes are taught in Spanish.

Final grades have USA equivalents.

Coursework

16 weeks intensive Spanish Language classes with international students

After an initial placement test, once entry level is determined, the student progresses to the highest level of his/her assimilation in the hours allotted in the semester.

10 weeks specialized seminar classes in Methods in Teaching Spanish (60 hours) built on 3 blocks:

  • teaching of Spanish as a foreign /second language to monolingual and to bilinguals leaners, theory, creation of materials, etc.
  • innovative pedagogical contributions to language acquisition, new technologies, etc.
  • updated perspective of Spain and the teaching of culture and civilization, intercultural work, diversity and immigration.

1 Week Classroom observation and assessment

Student may also choose one additional optional course:

  • Spanish Art and Architecture
  • Spanish Literature – Golden Age/ 19th and 20th Century
  • Spanish Current Events and Topics
  • Spanish History
  • Spanish Cinema

Class Schedule

  • Language classes – From Monday to Friday – 9.30 – 13.00
  • Optional classes – From Monday to Thursday – 13.30 – 15.00
  • Cultural Activities in afternoons or evenings or weekends

EDUCATION SEMESTER

  • 16 weeks /1 week holiday
  • Family Homestay – Single room + half Board
