One Hundred Reasons to Visit Madrid this Year

It is well known by those who live in the city that Madrid offers infinite possibilities for all tastes and types of travelers. But the Madrid City Council has now set itself the goal that everyone has a good reason to travel to Madrid.

Nothing more and nothing less than one hundred different reasons that, in the form of a guide called “Save the Date 2019”, review the 100 cultural, gastronomic, artistic, sports and leisure events that we should not miss during 2019 in the city.

You know what’s best? That some of these plans will be just a step away from TANDEM Madrid, such as the 200th anniversary of the Prado Museum, the “Lope y el Teatro del Siglo de Oro” exhibition of the National Library, the Gastrofestival, the Madrid Flamenco Festival at the Fernán Gómez Theatre or the Centenary of the Palacio Cibeles, to name a few.

There is also no lack of recommendations from purely Madrilenian traditions, such as the summer festivals of San Lorenzo, La Paloma and San Cayetano or the Fiestas de San Isidro, or another Spanish festivity, such as the Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Madrid, which takes different religious sculptures in procession through different parts of the city.

Sports lovers will also find in Madrid some sporting events on the international calendar such as the UEFA Champions League 2019 final (their fifth final of this trophy, for the first time in the Wanda Metropolitano stadium); and the Mutua Madrid Open and the Davis Cup Madrid Finals in the Caja Mágica.

The Bicentenary of the Prado Museum

One of the most important events of the year will undoubtedly be the celebration of the 200th anniversary of Spain’s most important museum: the Prado Museum, where you can enjoy a large collection of European paintings.

In order to celebrate it, an extensive program of activities has been organized, complementing visits to works by great masters of painting such as Velázquez, Goya, El Bosco, Tiziano, Rafael, and Rubens.

If Art with capital letters is your thing, at TANDEM Madrid we have the perfect complement for you to enjoy this celebration even more. Our “Spanish Course and Passion for Art”, in addition to teaching you Spanish, will also allow you to learn more about the Prado Museum and the artworks it contains.

The exhibition “Lope and the Golden Age Theater”

Also recommended is the exhibition that, until March 17, 2019, we can visit in the National Library of Spain (Biblioteca Nacional de España, BNE). An exhibition that covers one of the most brilliant moments in Spanish literature worldwide.

The main objectives of the exhibition are to show the keys of the Golden Age Theater at that time; its actuality in the stages and studios; and the role of new technologies in its staging, promotion, and research.

They are accompanied by pieces loaned by libraries, museums, theater companies, and research teams, as well as BNE bibliographic and documentary collections, such as manuscripts by Lope de Vega and other great authors.

Nor do they forget the influence on later literature, such as German and Spanish Romanticism, pre-revolutionary and revolutionary Russia, the Weimar Republic or Republican, Francoist and anti-Francoist Spain.
